The ending itself is hard to analyze and I think there are several Emilys in this particular reality.
Hanging the plot of the movie on just 2 possible states, that only apply to a living/dead being, would just be an incorrect application of that theory. First she throws her in the trunk and later attacks her in the bathroom and puts her in the bathtub. I mean, shes "trapped" in this alternate dimension where there already is a version of her, right?
For example, Mike explains that he was an actor on the show, "Roswell" while Laurie, who says she, "loves the show" has never seen him on the show. We watched the film again immediately after stoned as fuck and it made sooooo much sense.
EmilyB crawls into bathroom gets beat up dies and disappears overnight. The Emily that crawls back into the house (to eventually end up beaten with a toilet tank lid) - do you think that's the same Emily that was stuffed into the trunk? The movie BLEW MY MIND! The issue with Laurie and the yoga has always perplexed me.
She then walks back inside and we see her adjusting the sweater. I like to think that when "our" Emily passed out, it was a sign of the comet's effects finally ending - i.e., Schroedinger's "box" is opened. Escapes from the bathroom and no one sees her? I hope this explains the movie well enough for those that have watched it. The one thing that I don't understand is why the last Em we see faints in the first place. This means they had discussed the issue and a choice was made. So, It doesn't really matter what happens in the ending. Or is this another Emily from yet another reality who's stumbling into THIS Emily's reality -- meaning, in some other reality, another version of Emily is also cherry picking her destiny, drugs a version of herself who escapes but stumbles through the dark zone, only to wind up in the same reality as "our" Emily(s) ..? She goes to kill her and leaves her in the bathtub.
(IMdB, 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic.) Leave each other alone. We also hear Mike make a comment about Em having her understudy fill in for her dance performances while she is traveling for a month with Kevin at the end of the film.
Now that the "live" Emily has been observed, "EMILY" herself cannot exist in two different states, so the "dead" version is GONE. level 1 This would ruin the movie for me.
Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. The door to nowhere is actually a door to a beautiful place where they go to admire the comet as it "falls apart" just as the Emily, who's pretending to fit here, her world is falling apart. Why?
Mike also comments about her yoga while Laurie denies it but then mentions doing yoga when she is speaking to Kevin in the hallway later on in the film. One of my Top 5 of the last decade, a totally underrated movie. Don't forget, it's also entirely plausible that "evil Em" took the sweater off once she got inside, off-camera. I rented it this evening and really enjoyed it. But how do you explain the (presumably) dead-Emily's body missing from the tub the following morning? The Em4 when we see her does not have her sweater on.
When the lights come back on.
Pay attention to every time the power goes out. She was not killed via toilet lid like dead-Emily. It's about it being in EVERY state possible until it's observed. Em2 and Em4 are also different version of Em because Em4 is created when Em2 does get her sweater taken by Em1(the original Em). Makes sense. The realities are NOT just defined by the decisions of that night, they are defined by everything ever. We are led to believe that the dark void is the the box from Schrodinger's paradox but it's actually every instant where the outcome is unknown unless acted upon. Em1 does not have her sweater on even though we see multiple scenes of her taking the sweater off of the Em2, putting it on and walking inside he house, while still tugging on the sweater. If you believe this then it would explain Laurie and the Yoga. Huge Coherence fan, this is honestly an amazing theory/explanation, I've literally been sitting here for the past hour trying to really get my head around it.
Phone Emily is just another Emily who entered this reality, and in the box there was never an event that would have made Emily C vanish/die/leave so the only event to collapse to was her being there in reality with Emily A. This forms a whole new reality where the Em in the trunk was still wearing the sweater that had her cell phone thus was then able to call Kevin in the morning. And there's no way they shot the end of the movie and just forgot what she was wearing. By accepting that concept and then watching the ending, we can tell that there is a change in reality's in the final power outage at the end of the movie. The only way to move "forward" and not be stuck in a loop is to make the most of what you have instead of trying to find a better place to live in, because every place is as screwed up as the one you are in right now. What actually happens is we as the viewer is taken to another reality. Em1 is not Em3 because Em3 is another Em created in the event that Em1 does not take Em2's her sweater after putting her in the trunk. The present ending also says the same thing but takes the darker route to get there. In some we see them fighting, in one Kevin and Mike are tied up to chairs to keep them restrained, there's all kinds of stuff going down. Just keep both of them. Haven't seen Triangle yet, but it gets mentioned almost every time someone asks for movies similar to Coherence, so I'm sure it has similar vibes ! Emily Prime sneaks up on her double and drugs her. I’m not getting into the details and relationship between these 8 people. The meteor allowed them to interact with one each other so everyone that arrived to the dinner party were from alternate realities. To my mind, figuring out this sci-fi anomaly isn't exactly "the point" of the film. Note that it is not just two realities that have come toget… (I still have goosebumps from thinking about how creepy this is.). I would like to think this is what is going to happen, it's the only logical conclusion to draw. The only way that our Emily, the Emily who's viewpoint we are getting can survive is if she manages to kill either all of her 7 other friends. The only thing I'm having a hard time grasping, is the differences in the actual pre-comet states of the separate realities. It means people could end up in different dimensions after the comet passes. Tell me one thing, how can the final scene logically happen? Another Earth is a movie I have watched several times now, and the chance of getting to atone for your mistakes is going to remain romantic and valuable to me, forever.
It seemed that everytime one of them left or did something, the alternate would come. And it her disappearance WAS based on some scientific collapse of realities, how are two rings allowed to exist then? The original Em DOES end up in the Good reality but we are left with the final scene being the reality where the original Em forgets to grab the sweater from the Em that was placed in the trunk.
Why no one ever thinks about that.
