Twice in A Lifetime contains some flowing gypsy violin and orchestral sway and Where Does Music Come From switches through passages of tribal chants, dancing vocal lines, bubbling and vibrant percussion and sub classical piano and segues into 1000 Hand (Come Up) via some rubbery fretless bass. 2018 was, of course, the 50th anniversary of the formation of the band Yes, and was marked by events/ shows featuring all of the surviving original members: Tony Kaye joined the Steve Howe led line up for US shows; Bill Bruford introduced that line up at their anniversary shows, which included a fan weekend, in London (and also performed the unveiling of a plaque in honor of the band’s first gig in the former Lucky Horseshoe cafe in London) and; Jon Anderson led the “Yes featuring ARW” band on a series of shows including a large London celebration. The dance music vibe and tones just jar with me and the song itself is quite slight. Its title alludes to the lengthy and impressive roster of musicians who appear on the album, from several of the singer’s former Yes bandmates to Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Rick Derringer and the late Larry Coryell, among many others. It’s followed by the nine-minute Come Up, which opens with double bass then Chick Corea on piano and rock/jazz drums – it’s great, possibly as good as anything he’s done, with kettle drums, an 80s Phil Collins sound somewhere down beneath, more Squire and Luc-Ponty getting a neat violin solo (in which a second or two of slap bass appears, a beast best taken in small doses) before building up and fading to a Yes-like ocean of sound. Although perhaps not to everyone’s tastes, explorations like this that show that Anderson isn’t afraid of embracing genres that he usually wouldn’t be associated with, and he actually succeeds. It may not achieve the status of being a sustaining classic, but it is an adventurous piece that is very rewarding to experience in Anderson’s elder years. Memories sing in this lifetime, never forgot.” The simplicity packs a nostalgic punch and the listener may find a tear falling in sentimental love and hope. Indeed, those two songs would segue easily for a medley, from their tempos to their bass lines and horns.

“Activate” features Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) on flute and an all-star guitar section including Coryell, Steve Morse and Pat Travers, while “1000 Hands (Come Up)” is anchored by late Yes co-founder Chris Squire (one of three bassists on the track) and drummer Billy Cobham, with magnificent contributions from Corea, Ponty, and Zap Mama. The vocal melody of the verse is slightly reminiscent of Yes’ song “We Agree”, later moving to engaging choruses with a spiritually-uplifting vision. This prelude opens into the first proper track “Ramalama”, launched by Anderson’s multi-tracked vocals a la “We Have Heaven”. The next song “Activate” is a light acoustic piece which kicks off with Ian Anderson’s signature flute playing, joined by Robbie Steinhardt’s violin and a glimpse of Squire’s bass for a few bars. The story of this album is hopefully quite well known by now, beginning with music Jon was working on in the late 1990s, taken so far and then picked up, changed and added to over the last few years. Activate We stay on a high with “First Born Leaders”, which could naturally be a sequel to “Don’t Forget (Nostalgia)” from the Song of Seven album.
The three guest guitarists don’t fare as well, with Steve Morse, Larry Coryell and Pat Travers suffering the dynamic mentioned above where it’s unclear how much of their playing is actually in the final mix as opposed to the ever-present skilled house-band guitarist Tommy Calton. More Song of Seven references come in the next two songs: a beautifully orchestrated “variation” of the opening track “Now” (though much too short) with gorgeous violin and cello, and then the ballad “I Found Myself” where Tim Franklin’s fretless bass channels John Giblin’s amazing bass lines that he offered on songs like “Days” from nearly 40 years ago.

Ukuleles and a horn section underpin the jaunty “Makes Me Happy”, a charming song with a sing along chorus – it’s not “The Remembering” that’s for sure, but it’s a great pop sound with a crazy time signature middle section. This album again features jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, who we assume contributes the eastern string sound in songs such as the outstanding Ramalama. Several years later, his collaboration with Roine Stolt returned Anderson to full-on prog, essentially reclaiming his Yes roots.
A guitar-based song that typifies his spiritual philosophy; standard Anderson – sun, sky, light and love – “time is of now, not the past or future to come, to live to be.”.
On this album, the band limitations are lifted with the album cast like a movie director would, seeking the best actor for each part – and given the duration of the project it means they have been able to draw from the living, and in some cases even the departed. Closer “Now and Again,” which appears in shorter variations as the first track and again midway through the album, has a characteristically celestial mood, accentuated by Steve Howe’s solo on classical guitar, and a most simple message that best sums up this fine effort from Anderson: “Love is truly all you need.”.

Ironically only credited to vocals and keyboards, this song offers plenty of beats as it dances along the lines of electronica, perhaps coming to a dance hall near you if DJ’s pick it up.

As the polarities of banjo and electronic drums kick in, we have a re-imagined Anderson classic, with one foot solidly in the future while the other is rooted in the past. First Born Leaders features Yes’s Chris Squire (who died in 2015) and Alan White, and is a jolly song.
Happily, the mix is very well done and the end result feels like a joyous celebration. At the time that album was well received, with Jon showing his vocal power was returning after a series of health issues, but it did feel a bit disjointed.
Guests aside this is actually a really great song. Alan White is also credited on this track, though with Steady Joseph on percussion it is again hard to discern exactly where Alan is in the mix. Its title alludes to the lengthy and impressive roster of musicians who appear on the album, from several of the singer’s former Yes bandmates to Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Rick Derringer and the late Larry Coryell Corea is especially prominent in the mix, transporting the song to a whole different level than we usually hear from Anderson solo outings.
