In 2012, Dr. Joseph Sonnier, a Lubbock, Texas, pathologist, was found murdered in his own home.
His daughter, however, did testify to say that she believed her father lied on the stand to protect his friend. When Dixon’s wife found out, she filed for divorce, and Dixon and Shetina began dating exclusively. When authorities spoke to Shepard, he told them that his friend, Dr. Dixon, paid him three silver bars and gave him a box of Cuban cigars in exchange for the killing. They also said the silver bars Dixon gave to Shepard was part of a business investment for a company they were starting together. Dixon will either be sent back to prison or, if the prosecutors don’t prevail, Dixon could face a third trial for the same first-degree murder charges he faced in 2014.
Today, Dixon, who was released on bond, is awaiting his retrial. As part of his plea deal with prosecutors, Shepard waived his right to appeal his conviction.
