I'd seen the sign on I-90 before and decided to take a short detour to see this museum. The facilities are modern and well maintained.
There are picnic tables here (although they could use a shade on sunny days, but we made do) and a really nice visitors center.They're really dog friendly, with signs all over proclaiming this. While driving on the New York State Thruway was looking for the old Erie Canal Lock to show my wife. As you walk up the trail that was the towpath, you'll find a collection of buildings that were a part of the Port Byron lock environment. Definitely check it out! 1800's. You can access this facility from route 31 in Port Byron, or from the I-90 (NYS Thruway) in the eastbound direction only, near milepost 309.
Don’t forget to walk down to the Erie House Saloon to make your visit even better.
i went to the info desk to ask about wifi access and stood right at the desk, within two feet from these two staffers who were so engrossed in their own personal conversation that they ignored me completely.
The tokens are free, they give you one when you come in. Off the thruway there is a nice large easy parking lot. 71/R-a-D Challenge.

(I was there late in the afternoon on Halloween, the last day of the year.) You can see it all in 30 minutes. Unfortunatley the great wooden bar doesn't have any real ale or booze, which would be perfect.All in all it's a nice little pocket of history of Port Byron, once a bustling canal town and formerly a hamlet cut off by the construction of the Thruway. Loved this stop and they will be adding to the exhibits in the future so will be stopping in the future .
I'm going to share some traveler's secrets here about this place that the Thruway commission clearly doesn't want you to know. So glad we stopped here to eat lunch on our ride home along the NY Thruway. With the app, you can be your own docent and virtual tour guide!

The Erie Canal Museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the 1850 National Register Weighlock Building, the last remaining structure of its kind, and to telling the incredible adventure story of the Erie Canal. It was "twinned" with a larger lock so barges coupled together could lock through without the delay and expense of being untied to lock through separately. The tavern (Erie House) is an especially interesting artifact, featuring the original cash register, wood stove, advertising and signage, piano and most of the original bar, with sections of the bar and interior walls intentionally left unrestored so visitors can appreciate the efforts that went into bringing them back to life.
There are bathrooms as well, smaller than the travel plaza ones, but clean and in good condition. She told you everything about the place. Old Erie Canal lock 52 We happily found this by accident while traveling East on the NY Thruway at mile marker 308.4.
This is an informative stop and gives you a chance to learn about the Erie Canal and stretch your legs. You can get off at... We have been watching this place develop over the last year and couldn’t wait to see it. You'll find a tavern, a blacksmith shop, and a mule barn.
An absolute gem! "Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal."
It is also accessible from NY route 31 on the West edge of Port Byron. But the center's only open 9-5 and not year round as yet, so there's some rule that says they can't advertise the existence of the bathrooms.There's more! If you're traveling east on the NY State Thruway, and have some time to kill, this is a must-see for anyone interested in history, engineering, the Canal itself and/or preservation in general. This is a really easy on/off from I-90 and an outstanding opportunity to learn about the Erie Canal. Click here to purchase tickets. This lock was built as a part of the newly widened Erie Canal and used until about 1917 when the canal was widened once again, and also rerouted to the north which bypassed Port Byron entirely. We had hoped to stop to use restroom and eat lunch, but it was closed. Nice quick stop to stretch your legs. The only access is off the Thruway eastbound. Impressive! Outside is a full lock 52 rock work of the 1850's canal without water or or lock doors. One was in the lobby with the model of the lock, and she was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about telling the canal story and answering questions.
