When it comes to pump action shotguns, you’re either in this camp or the other (well, it’s not really that divisive). You just can't hurt it that easily. If I had to pick between the Ithaca 37 and the Browning I would take the Ithaca. Both the M37 and 870 are produced in hunting and defensive versions so either will suit whatever your needs may be (since you didn't specify). Used guns similar price. In the past couple of years, the design has be adjusted for a stock-less version, the Remington Tac-14, that, while isn’t categorized as a shotgun, it still fires shot shells. one problem seemed to exist with the 37s....at times they( at least the ones i owned) would just "dump" the shells in the mag.out on the ground...not often, but sometimes....and the early ones were like the model 12s in that they would fire another round if for some reason one did not release the trigger after the round in the barrel was fired....again, not an issue for the most part......what i do like about the wingmaster is that one can just "throw" a round in the receiver and close the bolt when the doves are about to take ya by storm...not as easy with the bottom eject guns......soooo for me it is easy.... .....it would be the 870, .....but i reallly do like the 37,,,,just not as much as the 870.... Don't overlook the Browning BPS. But If you want a outstanding upland game gun then the Ithaca 37 in 16 ga is the way to go. The double pump arms operate like lightening. I had a 1973 Ithaca 12 gauge Deluxe model. The light weight is worth it. I recently had it parkerized because of years of neglect, parkerizing is not as nice as blueing, but it sure looks 100% better than it did. Think of it as buying generic aspirin instead of name-brand Tylenol. For upland hunting, for walking around shooting things that fly or hop, the Ithaca 37 has no equal for how well it allows you to shoot. Additionally, the design — in the DM version — is also available with a detachable magazine. I've sold several 870's and never lost any sleep over them. I'd buy another in a minute if my legs hadn't crapped out on me.
If you want to shoot 1000's of rounds without a problem, buy the 870. They have different stock dimensions so whatever one you shoot better.
So how does the no-frills Ruger AR-556 perform when put to the test? I'd trade 10 870s for one M37 featherweight.
