At the risk of revealing too much, “Catfish” goes far deeper than simply exploring “My Kid Could Paint That”-esque questions about art prodigies, with the narrative eventually shaping up more like a repeat occurrence of “The Night Listener” for the Internet age.

When the filmmaking team found out “Catfish” had been accepted to Sundance, it became “very clear that Angela needed to be more involved,” Schulman said. “We were all sitting across the table, kicking each other’s ankles saying, ‘You tell her, you tell her,’ ” Schulman recalled.
Whether Catfish is a genuine documentary or an elaborate hoax is a conversation for another time. ... started to receive paintings from Abby Pierce… This question becomes surprisingly insignificant when watching the film. What inspires a Michigan-based 8-year-old girl to paint a photograph from the New York Sun, why does she reach out online to the guy who took it, and where could that connection possibly lead? Catfish is about Nev Schulman, a New York based professional photographer in his mid-twenties, who corresponds with eight-year old artist prodigy Abby Pierce through Facebook after she paints one of his photographs and mails it to him.
Wesselman-Pierce’s family members — including her husband and her two disabled stepsons — have been unaware of her online relationship.
This is not a ‘twist’ movie; the narrative plays out pretty much as you would expect. W hen the original Catfish documentary was released in 2010, it garnered immediate buzz due to its sheer novelty.
Human beings do not coexist in harmony, we coexist in conflict. It’s infinitely more satisfying, however, in that auds actually get to witness Nev go through the stages of infatuation, doubt, anger and betrayal, topped off with a surprisingly sympathetic resolution.

Though editor Zac Stuart-Pontier assembles the sprawling personal journey into swift and suspenseful shape, it helps immensely that Nev is such a charming screen presence.
Schulman said the filmmakers paid for a lawyer to represent Wesselman-Pierce and her husband to make sure they fully understood what the film entailed. Pic might have provided a bit more insight into how he coped with confronting the truth about his pen pals — just one of the many unanswered questions that make this tale so intriguing.
When reached at her home in Michigan via telephone recently, Wesselman-Pierce refused to discuss “Catfish.” “I told you I wasn’t interested. Until now, the movies have been fairly clumsy in their depiction of online behavior. The painting is based on his photo, and Schulman is impressed with it. The film was acquired by Rogue Pictures but released by Universal, the label’s former parent company.
"Catfish," which was released on DVD in January, was one of the most buzzed-about documentaries of the 2010. But Nikke Nason, Marquette’s arts administration director, said that Wesselman-Pierce’s name was not recognized by the president of the Lake Superior Art Assn. ... The film is released nationwide in the UK on 17th December. Instead it is a deftly clever commentary on the nature of identity and how it defines our role in society.

Those who haven’t seen “Catfish” and want to maintain the film’s suspense might want to stop reading here. Sure enough, “Catfish” confirms your worst suspicions about virtual relationships, but it also reveals with surprising sensitivity some of the psychology behind those deceptions — not that Joost and Schulman knew what they were doing when they started out.
But it also presents some of its own about the ethics of documentary filmmaking: Are the filmmakers exploiting Wesselman-Pierce and taking advantage of a woman who didn’t realize what she was getting into? At first, the only person Nev can reach by phone is Abby’s mother, Angela, though enticing party-girl photos of big sis Megan on Facebook swiftly lead to hot and heavy conversations between Nev and the overeager 19-year-old (who records songs for him by request).
With cameras rolling the whole time, Nev’s crush on Megan grows strong enough to compel a cross-country trip to meet the entire Pierce family, which is nothing like he expected.
