The information they have and, more importantly, the real-life stars they’re able to bring to audiences — whether on their television screens or at their TCM Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles — is extraordinary. Their father was Frank Mankiewicz, an early Peace Corps representative, Robert Kennedy’s press secretary and one-time chieftain of NPR, among other accomplishments.
All of a sudden, in the middle of that, I'm like, I don't know why I keep using the term podcast. But there are limits to who you can talk to, who can be the primary voice of your podcast, and who would be good at at it. As the host/ interviewer I'm guiding it, but I can't make it.
And he does a thing that many celebrities I've interviewed, most of whom aren't of the generation that we show, [don’t]. Every week TCM host Ben Mankiewicz sits down to interview acclaimed director Peter Bogdanovich breaking down not just the auteur’s movies but his rise and fall, as well as his personal relationships. And I don't mean how could it be more interesting than Alfred Hitchcock, but he's led a remarkable life. It's a good challenge to find who would make the most sense. Most of the notable character is none other than Ben Mankiewicz. It's funny, there's a way to be honest even if you're not always telling the truth, and I don't mean Peter wasn't telling the truth. We thought we would use these clips and have him talk about these directors. I regularly attend the AFI Film Festival and in my free-time I run the women-run entertainment podcast, Citizen Dame. It's difficult to watch now. Not easy.
BM: No, of course there are. Sometimes those people who do have enough time they didn't look any better. TCM has rapidly gone downhill since he emerged.

I'm not saying Cary Grant didn't have difficult moments in his life, he did, but he made it and then that was that. So I think there’s an audience out there that loves storytelling. Ben Mankiewicz: At its core it was my idea but other people helped shape it. Whether it's live or whether it's on tape there’s a moment where you ask somebody something and they don't give you an answer that they are ready with, even if they don't even know they're ready. It's an art. Making movies is not easy but once you know the idea of how to do it, you just do it. With a couple of sessions the audio isn't perfect, because Peter was interviewing them for a print piece and not for broadcast, because it would never have occurred to him at the time that these would be broadcast somewhere. How many windows did you lick before posting that gem? I learned to move quickly because you never have enough time. And I think that helped click for Peter. He knows timing.
The actual making of the picture is the same.
He was tcm's second ever host, and he was hired in 2003. He’s one of the best things on TV. And then just as we started talking to Peter about it and reading more about Peter, we thought that Peter was more interesting than the directors he was talking about. That happened again and again and again and again.

I didn't know how open Peter would be, there's no real way to know but over the course of probably close to 15 hours of interviews, five long sessions in a tiny, pretty intimate studio in Burbank he was unbelievably open and honest and forthcoming, and funny and interesting. There are so many days you have. The thing is, it’s basically radio on-demand. So those two ideas and that push led to rather than just put Peter on the air for a month talking about these directors, which was the initial plan, why don't we incorporate the podcast plan with Peter?

I don't even listen to his commentary. If you’re a classic film fan you live, eat, and breathe all things Turner Classic Movies.
So the audio was good, you could hear it, but it needed work to sell a podcast. Nice. I know an old agent whose story badly needs to get told. I just mean, everything from him was human about his success, about his failures, about his triumphs and about his disappointments.

I've listened to a few. We want to hear from you! I think I've gotten to be a pretty good interviewer, but I can't make people say things they don't want to say or don't want to talk about, nor do I want to.
I think that's important and, forgive me, but seeing Peter quoted in print it it’s just not the same. He was mostly a dramatic actor, but man, he would have been terrific at comedy because he knows how to tell jokes.
