Rosedale Chimney / Chimney Bank is a short and very steep climb from the village of Rosedale Abbey in the North York Moors. It's a linear route and is a just over a mile in total (ie, there and back). Advice It's a beautiful area, overlooked by many. By my estimation it's roughly 5 miles from the Chimney Bank car park to the famous Lion Inn pub at Blakey Ridge, situated at the highest point in the North Yorkshire Moors.
The process was known as calcination and the idea was to purify the iron, and reduce its weight, before it was carried by railway over the moors, initially to County Durham and later to Middlesbrough.
